AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, announced recently that up to $30,000 in mortgage relief would be available for homeowners still facing the challenges of COVID-19.

“With another Illinois winter almost here, secure housing is becoming even more vital to keeping families safe and healthy,” Hernandez said. “Financially-punishing mortgage payments create housing instability and make meeting other needs, such as utility payments, warm clothes and medical bills more difficult. This mortgage payment relief could not come at a more important time, and I strongly encourage all eligible households to apply.”

The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) is reopening a mortgage assistance program, the Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF), to provide up to $30,000 in direct mortgage assistance to eligible homeowners. To qualify for ILHAF assistance, homeowners must have experienced a financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic after Jan. 21, 2020. To apply or to receive more information on eligibility, homeowners can visit https://www.illinoishousinghelp.org/.

“Building a better life while living under the shadow of housing insecurity is impossible,” Hernandez said. “The ILHAF will help remove that burden and allow families to thrive during this difficult period without taking on copious amounts of debt or making tough sacrifices.”
