CHICAGO – If you know a local school board member who has exhibited outstanding leadership in their role to help the students, teachers and parents they serve, state Rep. Fran Hurley is encouraging you to nominate them for the Illinois State Board of Education’s (ISBE) annual Thomas Law Burroughs Award.

“Some of the most dedicated officials you will meet are local school board members,” Hurley said. “It’s an often thankless role, but a critically important one for our communities. If you know of someone who has gone above and beyond, please consider nominating them for statewide recognition.”

Created in 1991, ISBE’s Burroughs Award recognizes extraordinary leadership on behalf of education at the local level. Criteria for the award identifies the following three areas of accomplishment:

  • Personal leadership in improving student learning, closing achievement gaps, and supporting educational excellence; and/or
  • Personal leadership in expanding educational opportunities for underserved students; and/or
  • Personal leadership in resolving a crisis or major difficulty with the result of more equitable outcomes for students.

Nominations are due to ISBE by Oct. 21, 2022. Additional information and an online submission form can be found at https://www.isbe.net/Pages/thomas-lay-burroughs-award.aspx.
