SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The following is a statement from the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus regarding the recent arrival of asylum seekers to Chicago from Texas:

“The immigrant experience is deeply ingrained in not only the state of Illinois but also the Latino community. Many of our friends, family, and community members are immigrants or come from immigrant families. Illinois will always be a state that welcomes immigrants and provides them the opportunities to become citizens and pursue their dreams.

It is unfortunate to see that asylum seekers and their trauma is being wielded as a weapon by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. While the Texas Governor is playing politics with people’s lives and
livelihoods, we will not. The Latino Caucus will stand in solidarity with the asylum seekers who arrived in Chicago early Wednesday and all immigrants who call Illinois and the United States
home. ”
