EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Following the tragic loss of life in Highland Park, Ill. on July 4, state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, issued the following statement:
“The Fourth of July is meant to be a day of celebration, but instead we find ourselves once again navigating the shock of yet another unspeakable tragedy. My thoughts today are with the residents of Highland Park as they mourn and as they begin the long process of recovery. The shooting in Highland Park was the 311th mass shooting in the United States in 2022, and communities everywhere are reeling. I hope we can all set aside partisan talking points and support the victims and their families, to promote healing, and to work together to prevent future such horrors. The shared trauma of these events is more terrible than mere words can express, but there is hope to be found in that attribute: ‘shared.’ The saving grace of people in all sorts of awful circumstances has often been the support of those around them. Today, I stand with the people of Highland Park, and I am comforted by the knowledge that, throughout our state, many others do as well. Today, let us put aside our differences and be the community the victims of this tragedy need.”
