CICERO, Ill. — State Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero, released the following statement in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade:
“I am deeply disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and directly undermine women and pregnant people’s right to bodily autonomy and self determination. This reckless decision puts the health and safety of so many Americans at risk.
“Throughout my time as a state representative, I have worked tirelessly to ensure that Illinois remains a strong defender of the right to choose. In 2019, I co-sponsored the Reproductive Health Care Act, which codified the right to reproductive health care in Illinois law. I also voted for a comprehensive legislative package this past session that further protects and defends one’s right to reproductive health care. In Illinois, the right to choose is settled law and will persist regardless of the Supreme Court’s actions.
“Illinois will never go back, but we must do better. Unfortunately, immigrants and communities of color — who suffer from higher rates of maternal mortality and steeper barriers to accessing affordable health care — will face the most serious consequences of this dangerous decision. As my colleagues and I return to Springfield to bolster reproductive health care rights and protections, I will continue my work to protect these vulnerable communities and ensure everyone’s right to reproductive health care remains intact.”
