DECATUR, Ill. – A bill co-sponsored by state Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, that requires health insurance policies to cover continuous glucose monitors for diabetes patients was recently signed into law.

“Everyone, regardless of circumstance or socioeconomic status, deserves affordable, high quality health care. For people living with diabetes, that means access to continuous glucose monitors that help them manage their disease,” Scherer said. “This new law will help so many people receive the care they need so they can live full, healthy lives.”

Senate Bill 2969 requires group and individual health insurance policies and managed care plans to cover continuous glucose monitors when medically necessary for individuals with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Continuous glucose monitors automatically track a person’s blood sugar in real time. This helps people with diabetes make informed decisions about their diet and medications.

“After Illinois capped the cost of insulin, guaranteeing coverage for continuous glucose monitors was the natural next step in supporting diabetes patients across the state,” said Scherer. “I care deeply about expanding access to health care for all Illinoisans and I will continue to work toward that goal.”
