CICERO, Ill. — State Representative Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero, and state Rep. Mike Zalewski, D-Riverside, recently welcomed Czech Senate and business delegations to Cicero.

The delegation included the President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic Miloš Vystrčil, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security Pavel Fischer and the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Compatriots Living Abroad Tomáš Czernin. Hernandez gifted each with books on the Czech community in Chicagoland and in the 24th District.

“From Pilsen to Little Village, then to Cicero, Berwyn and the surrounding communities, the Czech and Mexican immigrant story is the same,” Hernandez said. “Our people left their homelands looking for better opportunity for their families. Both have thrived in their adopted country but have never forgotten their traditions and their culture. I am proud to stand with my colleague Mike Zalewski and support our immigrants in any way possible.”

Welcoming the Czech delegations to Cicero is only one of the ways Hernandez supports immigrant communities. Last legislative session, Hernandez led negotiations to expand Medicaid benefits to undocumented individuals ages 42-64 and passed a budget that extends earned income tax credit eligibility to filers with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
