CICERO, Ill. — In recognition of his bravery and service, Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero, congratulates Lt. Brian Kulaga of the Cicero Fire Department for being awarded the Medal of Honor by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

“Our first responders sacrifice so much to make our communities a safe place to live. Their hard work and dedication should always be celebrated,” said Hernandez. “I am especially proud of Lt. Kulaga for achieving this special honor. Both on and off duty, Lt. Kulaga exhibits extraordinary courage, selflessness and deep concern for the lives of others. He is a true hero and I commend him for his service.”

In February 2021, Lt. Kulaga was running errands for the fire department when he saw smoke coming from the apartments on the second floor of a local restaurant. He notified employees of the fire before gaining access to the second floor and helping two residents to safety. He then assisted the Lyons firefighters with hose lines as they responded to the fire.

Lt. Kulaga was awarded the Medal of Honor award on May 10. The Medal of Honor is the highest possible award given by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. It is given to a firefighter for an act of bravery that clearly demonstrates great selflessness and personal courage beyond the call of duty.

“Even when he was off duty, Lt. Kulaga risked his life to save the lives of others and took the time to help his fellow firefighters finish the job,” Hernandez said. “In the face of great personal risk, Lt. Kulaga put others before himself. On behalf of the community of Cicero and the 24th district, I thank him for his continued service and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”
