GURNEE, Ill. – During the holiday season, state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, is encouraging residents to continue taking necessary precautions against COVID-19 to safely enjoy the holidays. There are a number of steps the community can take to protect themselves and their family members during holiday gatherings as we face the ongoing pandemic.

“Given the spread of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19, it is crucial that we continue to take necessary safety measures,” Mason said. “The holidays are a time to celebrate traditions with family and friends, and we want to ensure as a community we are doing that safely.”

COVID-19, as well as other illnesses such as the cold and the flu, spread easier as more people gather inside during the winter season. The most effective measure to protect oneself and others according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is getting vaccinated against COVID-19 and getting vaccinated against the flu. The CDC recommends that everyone ages five or older receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Residents can find more information on COVID-19 vaccines, including safety information and where to get vaccinated, at vaccines.gov.

Other safe practices including wearing a mask and maintaining six feet of physical distance when possible, avoiding crowded, poorly ventilated spaces, and not hosting or attending a gathering if you are feeling sick. Additionally, the CDC recommends taking an at-home test before joining indoor gatherings with others who are not in your household. For more information, residents can click the link for CDC’s holiday celebrations safety guide at cdc.gov/COVID19.

“I encourage residents to get the vaccine or a booster dose if they are eligible, and continue following CDC guidelines,” Mason said. “With cases and hospitalizations on the rise and the new Omicron variant spreading in Illinois, we must take the necessary steps to protect our community this holiday season.”
