ROCKFORD, Ill. – With winter fast approaching, state Rep. Dave Vella, D-Rockford, is highlighting winter weather safety tips that residents can implement to help stay safe over the coming months.

“Whether it’s extreme cold or icy roads, winter often brings many hazardous conditions that can put the safety of residents at risk,” said Vella. “I highly encourage everyone to see what they can do to help protect themselves and their loved ones over the upcoming winter months.”

With the dangerous conditions that winter can bring, Vella is highlighting the National Weather Service’s (NWS) Winter Weather Safety Tips that can be used to winterize homes and vehicles. The NWS recommends residents keep fire extinguishers in their home and insulate walls, attics, doors and windows, in addition to maintaining a storm kit in their car with essentials such as blankets, extra clothes and a flashlight. The NWS also provides a Winter Preparedness Checklist that residents can use to ensure they are ready for hazardous situations. For more tips, please visit the NWS’s website at weather.gov/ilx/winter-prep.

“While the winter months often bring challenges, many dangerous situations can be prevented by taking the necessary precautions,” said Vella. “It is always a good idea to be prepared, and now is a great time to take a few moments and ensure you are ready once winter comes.”
