CHICAGO – In order to ensure that everyone has access to stable housing, state Rep. Cyril Nichols, D-Chicago, is encouraging residents who have faced financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic to take advantage of the Illinois Rental Payment Program (IRPP).

“With so many residents struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical that we are providing support to renters to ensure they are able to keep a roof over their head,” said Nichols. “I highly encourage residents to take a few moments and see if the Illinois Rental Payment Program can help keep them afloat.”

The IRPP provides up to 15 months of rental assistance, up to $25,000, for residents who have been directly or indirectly financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. To be eligible, households must be at risk for homelessness or housing instability and must have a household income less than 80% of the area median income. IRPP applications will be available from Dec. 6, 2021 through Jan. 9, 2022. For more information or to apply, please visit ihda.org/about-ihda/illinois-rental-payment-program/.

“After the last year and a half of economic uncertainly and hardship, we cannot allow residents to have to secure basic necessities, such as housing, without any assistance,” said Nichols. “No one should be homeless due to economic conditions that are beyond their control, and I look forward to continuing to work to ensure that everyone has the resources they need to have a stable housing situation.”
