AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is hosting a “Know Your Rights” workshop to assist immigrants living in her community with legal advice regarding their rights during various immigration proceedings. On Nov. 20th, at Sacred Heart Church on 755 Fulton Street in Aurora from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., she will be joined by Ald. Juany Garza; Ana and Casildo Cuevas, President and Vice President of Uni2; and representatives from immigration advocacy groups.

“The immigrant community makes many significant contributions to our state, but all too often they face life-changing legal proceedings without knowing their rights. I’d like to offer them an opportunity to prepare for these situations,” Hernandez said. “I encourage everyone from the immigrant community to attend so they can learn what they need to know to do what’s best for them and their families.”

Securing rights and fair protections for the immigrant community has been a priority for Hernandez during her time as a representative. On the House Housing Committee, she pushed for measures to secure housing protections. Hernandez also backed House Bill 709, which requires information on immigrant rights be prominently posted in high-traffic public places, such as train stations, highway rest stops and airports.
