BOLINGBROOK, Ill. – State Rep. Dagmara “Dee” Avelar, D-Bolingbrook, is encouraging residents to research different health insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace this November to ensure everyone is covered and protected this upcoming year.

“Healthcare is not a luxury, but a human right. It is sad to see so many people refuse treatment because of high costs,” Avelar said. “I understand how difficult it is to choose between addressing basic needs and paying a healthcare bill because my family and I were in that situation. I highly encourage everyone to utilize the ACA Marketplace because there are hundreds of affordable plans to choose from and resources to assist those who are low-income.”

Avelar is constantly advocating for affordable healthcare. She is the chief sponsor for House Resolution 130, which expresses support for the Affordable Care Act and the Medicaid program. Earlier this year, Avelar assisted in amending the Illinois Administrative Procedure Act and the Illinois Insurance Code, which ultimately allowed telehealth services to be covered by all insurance carriers in Illinois when deemed medically necessary.

The ACA Marketplace will begin open enrollment November 1, 2021 and end January 15, 2022. There are a total of eleven carriers available to the public with 275 plans. The public should research which plan is available in their county. The ACA Marketplace covers pre-existing conditions and its plans offer free preventative care services. Eligibility for Medicaid is also available through a questionnaire.

“It is evident that there is a healthcare crisis when people are willing to deny care to avoid debt,” Avelar said. “I will continue working with my colleagues to pass progressive legislation that will make healthcare affordable, accessible and high-quality.”
