ROCKFORD, Ill. – In order to help keep residents safe, state Rep. Dave Vella, D-Rockford, is recognizing Fire Safety Prevention Month and encouraging residents to take a few moments and learn how to protect themselves from fires.

“With the winter seasons fast approaching, it is the perfect time to take a few moments and learn how to easily protect yourself and your property from fire damage,” said Vella. “There are plenty of quick ways to fireproof your home, and I highly encourage residents to learn and implement these tips.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires are most likely to occur during the winter months. To ensure that residents are equipped to protect themselves from these fires, Vella is highlighting the Illinois State Fire Marshall’s suggestions for homeowners to stay safe. These tips include regularly testing your smoke alarms, keeping matches and lighters in safe areas, and creating a home escape plan. Since entering the General Assembly earlier this year, Vella has worked to reduce fires in Illinois. He helped pass legislation requiring fire and smoke dampers to be inspected by a certified inspector. He also has worked to provide relief to firefighters, supporting legislation providing property tax relief to those harmed in the line of duty.

“It is vital that we are doing everything in our power to both protect ourselves and ensure that those who protect us have the resources they need to keep us safe,” said Vella. “Fire Safety Prevention Month is the perfect time to ensure that you are doing everything you can to keep yourself and your family safe.”
