GURNEE, Ill. – Looking to expand youth sports and athletic opportunities for all students in Illinois, state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, was recently appointed to the Illinois Commission on Amateur Sports.
“Sports are a great way for kids to stay active, build healthy habits, and learn about teamwork and perseverance,” said Mason. “Sporting events can also be a great way for a community to come together to support their youth and also bring visitors and new people to the area.”
The Illinois Commission on Amateur Sports was created by the Mason-sponsored legislation, House Bill 3870. The Commission will focus on encouraging youth physical fitness through sports by providing workshops and training for schools and communities. They will work to create opportunities for students from historically disadvantaged communities and people with disabilities. Mason and the rest of the Commission will work to connect state and local government with private groups to help create additional funding and partnerships to grow opportunities for students. Additionally the Commission, comprised in part of Olympians, will work to expand sports tourism including searching for investment for an Olympic Training Center.
“By helping foster public and private partnerships, we can expand opportunities for all students in Illinois to participate in sports,” said Mason. “We are working to create opportunities for every athlete in Illinois, from Olympic medal winners to student athletes participating just for fun.”
