CHICAGO – Due to his leadership on critical state legislation, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, was selected for and participated in the Council of State Governments (CSG) Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development (BILLD) program this week.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue developing my leadership skills to better advocate and serve my constituents,” said Slaughter. “This opportunity broadened my knowledge of regional issues and how other legislators tackle obstacles in their state. I was excited to share all the great work we have been doing here to build a stronger Illinois, especially our work on social justice and prison reform.”

The BILLD program is a selective leadership program for Midwestern legislators held by the Council of State Governments. This bipartisan program connects legislators from 11 states and four Canadian provinces to develop leadership for their selected fellows. The CSG aims to foster the exchange of insights and ideas to shape public policy, develop leaders and create partnerships within the Midwestern region.

Slaughter attended the conference hosted by the CSG in Minneapolis this week, participating in policymaking workshops on health care, trade relations, state economies and other pressing issues facing the Midwest. He also joined leadership training sessions that focused on conflict resolution, negotiation and consensus building.

Notable alumni of the program have included Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Treasurer Michael Frerichs and Senate President Don Harmon.
