CHICAGO –  To ensure residents are aware of all vaccine availability, state Rep. Lakesia Collins, D-Chicago, is highlighting the recommendation of the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) for high-risk populations to get a COVID-19 Vaccine Booster.

“As scientists continue to learn more every day about COVID-19, it is imperative that we continue to listen to health professionals and their latest recommendations,” said Collins. “Booster shots are recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health. These shots are an easy way to continue to stay safe from COVID-19 and the Delta Variant.”

The CDC and IDPH recommend the following groups get booster shots:

  • People 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series.
  • People aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series.
  • People aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.
  • People aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.

Individuals may contact their health care provider or visit www.vaccines.gov to find a nearby location to receive a booster dose.

“As we continue to live through this pandemic, we should ensure we are following all safety protocols like wearing masks, washing hands frequently and getting the vaccine when possible,” continued Collins. “Stay safe and we will get through this.”
