ALSIP, Ill. – State Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago, is applauding additional state resources for the Garden Homes Fire Protection District which will help provide local first responders with the tools they need and keep communities safer.

“Fire protection districts that serve smaller communities face unique challenges that may make it harder to obtain equipment to keep families safe,” said Hurley. “The Small Equipment Grant Program helps our first responders carry out their duties by providing grants to purchase small firefighting and ambulance equipment they may not have access to otherwise.”

Hurley, who serves as the Chair of the House Police and Fire Committee, is congratulating the Garden Homes Fire Protection District for receiving the 2021 Small Equipment Grant from the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OFSM). The OFSM received nearly 450 applications from fire protection districts across the state for this grant program, and awarded $3.3 million in grants to fire departments and EMS providers throughout Illinois.

“Having the resources to replace aging equipment or invest in new equipment will make a huge difference in keeping our first responders safe while they work,” continued Hurley. “I am proud to see the state give back to our first responders who risk so much to protect our families.”
