NAPERVILLE, Ill. – New forms of media continue to proliferate and exert their influence on important issues. State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville, is sponsoring House Bill 234 to ensure that students have the tools they need to be strong critical thinkers in evaluating media sources.
“I’m especially excited about this bill because a local Naperville Central High School student directly influenced and helped push forward this legislation,” Yang Rohr said. “Braden Hajer recognized the importance of media literacy. He showed great initiative reaching out to me and to Assistant Majority Leader Lisa Hernandez about an issue he cared about, and his input resulted in stronger legislation that will benefit all our students.”
Yang Rohr is sponsoring House Bill 234 with the intention of bringing more attention and assistance to learning about media comprehension. House Bill 234 would require the State Board of Education to determine how to prepare and make available instructional resources and learning materials regarding the Media Literacy course.
“I will always be passionate about supporting legislation that involves education,” said Yang Rohr. “Being a state legislator means that I can help lead people in a direction that allows them to find success, and by increasing access to media literacy in our schools, we can do that for our students.”
