ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – With the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic causing financial hardship for many residents, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is encouraging residents to take advantage of a new program aimed at assisting landlords and tenants in keeping their homes.

“With many residents struggling to make ends meet, it is imperative that they have ample support to keep themselves and their families in their homes,” said Yingling. “No one should be facing housing insecurity because of circumstances far beyond their control, and I highly recommend residents utilize their new program and get the relief they need.”

The Illinois Rental Payment Program (ILRPP) aims to provide relief to those unable to pay rent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Applicants may receive up to 15 months of assistance with a max grant of $25,000, which covers up to 12 months of previous rent as well as 3 months of future assistance. Those eligible for assistance are residents who are behind on their rent for at least a month, rent their home as their primary residence, have experienced a financial hardship directly or indirectly due to the pandemic, and have a total gross income less than 80% of the Area Median Income. Applications are completed by both landlords and tenants. Applications started by landlords are currently being accepted from not until June 7, while tenants can apply from June 9 through June 28. “With the hardship that we have all had to endure over the past year, the last thing residents need to face is potentially losing their homes,” said Yingling. “This program is a major help in our goal to rebuild after the pandemic, and I will work in Springfield to continue those efforts and help return our state to normalcy.”
