DECATUR, Ill. – To honor the families of fallen military soldiers, state Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, recently passed legislation that will waive application fees for Gold Star family license plates.

Families of fallen soldiers should be able to proudly honor their loved ones without having to pay a fee to honor the lives of our fallen military members,” said Scherer. “This is a simple, common sense way we can help people during these difficult times. Our fallen heroes deserve to be honored by their families without paying a fee.”

Scherer’s legislation, House Bill 20, repeals the registration fee for Gold Star license plates for surviving spouses or parents of veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. Scherer’s legislation passed out of the Illinois House of Representatives with unanimous, bipartisan support and is now up for consideration in the Senate.

“As we have seen the financial burden the pandemic still continues to have on our residents and communities across Illinois, this is another simple way to help many families within our state,” said Scherer. “Gold Star families have already experienced a lot of sacrifices so we want to always continue to show our love and admiration for those who gave their lives for our country and all of those who loved them.”
