ROCKFORD, Ill. – State Rep. Dave Vella, D-Rockford, has been appointed to serve on the Veterans’ Affairs committee for the remainder of 2021-2022 legislative session. The committee will nearly double from its current 6 members to 10.
“The Veterans’ Affairs committee is one of the most important committees in the General Assembly,” said Vella. “One of our heaviest responsibilities is the wellbeing of our Veterans. Those who sacrificed so much for each and every one of us are owed good, quality homecare in a safe and professional environment. I pledge to prioritize military families both on the House floor and within this committee that I’m enormously proud to be a part of.”
The committee meets regularly to discuss current laws, proposed legislation, and hears testimony from stakeholders and citizens alike. Recent COVID-19 outbreaks at the Veterans Homes in Quincy and LaSalle have brought nursing home safety protocols to the forefront of the committee’s mind. Vella begins his role on the committee this week as hearings begins to dig deeper on the failures at the LaSalle Veteran Home.
“I accepted the invitation to join the committee in large part to find out what went wrong in LaSalle and to make sure that it doesn’t happen again anywhere else in Illinois,” said Vella. “I always value the opportunity to listen to our Veterans and their needs and I am more honored than ever to be named as a member of the committee. I represent many Veterans back home in the Rockford area and even more military families throughout the district.”
