Moylan Passes Legislation to Update Transportation Infrastructure Design Standards

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, recently advanced legislation to create the Complete Streets Act, an effort aimed at modernizing Illinois’ transportation infrastructure and improving public safety.

“Passing the Complete Streets Act is another milestone in our mission to make statewide transportation improvements that are long overdue,” Moylan said. “This will help ensure that all transportation projects, including all those funded through the Rebuild Illinois initiative, are conducted using the highest design standards while protecting the safety of all Illinois residents and travelers.”

The Moylan-introduced House Bill 389, also referred to as the Complete Streets Act, requires the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to use the funds appropriated toward transportation projects to improve the safety, access and mobility of all transportation systems for pedestrians and commuters throughout the state. The bill ensures that the latest and best standards will be used to build a comprehensive and connected public transit network. The bill also creates the Complete Streets Advisory Board who will, in coordination with IDOT, make recommendations for the implementation of these new standards for all relevant projects. The Complete Streets Act recently arrived in the Senate after passing the House without opposition.

“Tremendous progress toward comprehensive transportation modernization has been made in just a few years, but there is still plenty of work to be done,” Moylan said. “Illinois is one of the largest transportation hubs in the United States and our transportation network should represent that. I plan on continuing my efforts for across-the-board enhancements to all public transportation in Illinois, and I hope my colleagues in the Senate feel the same and pass this important legislation.”
