SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Concerned that many Illinois drivers carrying small trailers are being charged an unnecessarily high toll for said trailers, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, introduced and passed legislation with bipartisan support which would keep the tolls for small trailers at a reasonable rate.

“The current system makes no distinction between single and double-axle trailers, so drivers are getting charged an exorbitant rate for pulling very small cargo,” Moylan said. “If you were hauling a lawn mower on a single-axle trailer you are paying the same rate as a vehicle pulling a small semi truck, which any reasonable and rational person will tell you is ridiculous and incredibly unfair.”

The Moylan-introduced House Bill 394 states that the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority shall not charge a toll for a passenger vehicle pulling a trailer with no more than two axles at a rate higher than double the regular vehicle rate. For example if a toll is $1.50 for a vehicle and that vehicle happens to be pulling a single axle trailer, the toll for that trailer would only be an additional $1.50. The legislation has bipartisan support and recently passed the House without opposition.

“Working in the general assembly there are a multitude of combatting views, so when a bill has bipartisan support and passes unanimously it is clear that the legislation is a common sense solution, something I hope to continue to bring moving forward,” Moylan said. “I sincerely hope that my colleagues in the Senate will see that this system needs to be corrected and pass this legislation as we did in the House.”
