Moylan Leading Efforts to Expand Sexual Assault Prevention

DES PLAINES, Ill. – Working to protect the safety of Illinois residents, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is spearheading efforts in the General Assembly to expand state resources dedicated to sexual assault prevention and ensure that existing resources for sexual assault prevention are safeguarded.

“Every year in Illinois, thousands of sexual assaults occur and we should be doing everything we can to not only support the survivors of sexual assault, but to find more effective strategies in preventing their heinous crimes from happening in the first place,” Moylan said. “We must preserve the existing resources dedicated to supporting survivors and prevention, but also ramp up our efforts to prevent assaults.”

Moylan introduced House Bill 3479 which would increase funding toward the Department of Human Services (DHS) to be used for sexual assault prevention activities and survivor support. He has also introduced House Bill 400, which would ensure that sexual assault crisis centers operating under the Illinois sexual assault prevention program would still receive their full funding despite a potential federal government shutdown in the future. Moylan is optimistic that expanding sexual assault prevention resources and preserving the existing resources regardless of the federal government’s funding will greatly improve Illinois’s existing survivor support programs and help prevent sexual assaults from occurring in the first place.

“Sexual assault is an abhorrent crime and we need to be relentless in our efforts to stop it from happening,” Moylan said. “I believe these bills will be very helpful to DHS supporting survivors and implementing sexual assault prevention activities, and I hope my colleagues in the General Assembly join my efforts to expand sexual assault prevention in Illinois.”
