ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – As part of his efforts to lower taxes, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is backing legislation that would increase the amount of people eligible for income tax credits.
“The issue I hear about most when I am talking to my constituents is that their taxes are incredibly burdensome,” said Yingling. “Residents are counting on us in Springfield to get them relief in any way possible, whether it’s through property tax relief or other forms of tax breaks.”
Yingling is co-sponsoring House Bill 2792, which would expand the eligibility of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to those 18 to 24 years old, people who use a taxpayer identification number to file their taxes, and people 65 and over without dependents. The bill also creates the Eligible Dependent Tax Credit (EDTC), which is available to those who qualify for the EITC who also are uncompensated caretakers for dependents under 6 years old, over 70 years old, or are physically or mentally incapable for caring for themselves.
Throughout his time as state representative, Yingling has been committed to reducing the tax burden on his constituents. Recently, he has backed legislation that would freeze property taxes through 2023. In addition, Yingling regularly holds Property Tax Assessment Seminars, which help attendees contest their assessments and lower their property taxes.
“The tax system in Illinois is regressive, and major reforms are needed to give residents the relief they deserve,” said Yingling. “I will continue working to find opportunities to get relief to those who need it most and make our tax system fairer to our residents.”
