Yingling Backs Legislation to Ban Red-Light Cameras Amidst Controversy of Camera Contracts

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is supporting legislation that would ban the use of red-light cameras in Illinois due to recent corruption concerns regarding the use of the cameras by municipalities.

“With little evidence to show that they actually increase safety, red-light cameras are used as an unethical and regressive revenue stream for corporations and local governments,” said Yingling. “It is clear that red-light cameras pit the interests of local governments and corporations against the interests of residents, and there is no good reason to allow this conflict to continue.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the effectiveness of red-light cameras has been a source of controversy, with study results showing both increases and decreases in the number of accidents at red-light camera intersections. In addition to their unclear effectiveness and their cost to taxpayers, a recent probe revealed corruption allegations surrounding the use of red-light cameras. To eliminate corruption regarding red-light camera contracts and to provide relief to residents, Yingling is cosponsoring House Bill 3980, which prohibits local governments from operating red-light cameras.

Throughout his time as a state representative, Yingling has worked to provide financial relief to area residents. He recently introduced legislation that would lower property tax costs for taxpayers by expanding the maximum amount homeowners can save through multiple property tax exemptions, as well as legislation that would freeze property tax increases over the next couple of years.

“With the many financial burdens that residents face, it is critical that we look for every opportunity to provide them with relief,” said Yingling. “Whether it’s through tax relief or through other methods, I will look for every opportunity to help cut costs for middle-class families.”
