DES PLAINES, Ill. – As an avid supporter of the men and women who serve in the military and an advocate for the veteran community, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, has signed onto legislation to significantly expand state efforts to assist veterans with health care, mental health, housing, job training and job placement.
“Those who served in our nation’s military deserve nothing less than our full support, and for too long there have been severe issues afflicting the veteran community in Illinois and throughout the entirety of the United States that have not been adequately addressed,” Moylan said. “It is time that we step up and show our veterans that we care deeply for their well-being and begin to repay the debt we owe them for all of the sacrifices they have made on behalf of our country.”
The Moylan-supported House Bill 35, also referred to as the Veterans’ Bill of Rights, aims to provide wide ranging support for veterans. The legislation would direct the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to increase loans given to veteran-owned businesses, increase access to adequate health care coverage for veterans, implement improved programs aimed to prevent veteran suicide and develop a plan to eliminate veteran homelessness in Illinois within three years. Furthermore, the legislation would begin to permit any relevant military experience to be applied toward professional licensing, review vocational programs and improve the job training and placement programs for returning military members and veterans.
“The problems afflicting the veteran community in Illinois and throughout our country have to be dealt with as soon as possible, which is why we need to pass the Veterans’ Bill of Rights and continue to build off of it moving forward,” Moylan said. “Nearly 20 veterans lose their lives to suicide every day, tens of thousands of veterans are experiencing homelessness and hundreds of thousands are experiencing unemployment throughout the country. These men and women are American heroes and it is time that we begin treating them with the respect they deserve.”
