DES PLAINES, Ill. – Fighting to keep arbitrary taxes in check and Illinois residents’ money in their own pockets, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is working to repeal the hike for the fees placed on registering trailers towed by vehicles.
“The dramatic hike in the fees placed on trailers is unfair to Illinois residents, and while it was part of the 2019 capital plan, it is clear that it must be changed,” Moylan said. “Previously, the fees were realistic, but now Illinois residents with car trailers are being forced to pay far too much. The 2019 capital plan funded many good programs and has greatly helped Illinois get back on track since it was enacted, but this tiny fragment raising the trailer registration fee $100 is completely arbitrary and now we should ensure Illinoisans don’t have to pay these fees.”
In 2020 the fees to register the license plates for a vehicle trailer increased from $18 to $118. Moylan has co-sponsored two pieces of legislation to reduce the registration cost placed on trailers. House Bill 636 has more than 50 cosponsors and would repeal the recent hike in trailer fees, lowering it from the current $118 back down to the original $18. House Bill 682 has more than a dozen cosponsors and would create the option for residents to purchase a permanent trailer plate for a one-time fee of $118 and pay no annual fees, while also lowering the non-permanent fees back down to the original $18 annually.
“We in the legislature should not be working to find small ways to squeeze every tax dollar from working class Illinoisans, we should be looking to protect the middle class, especially during the current economic climate,” Moylan said. “I have spoken to many residents who are rightfully upset about the sudden hike in registration fees. The bills I am supporting already have widespread, bipartisan support, and with that support we ought to change this law without delay.”
