Hernandez, Kifowit Bring Redistricting Committee to Aurora to Hear Local Input

Aurora, Ill. – State Reps. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, and Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, are working to make local voices heard in Illinois’ redistricting process by bringing a public hearing of the House Redistricting Committee to Aurora on Friday, April 9 at 4 p.m. The hearing will be held at Aurora City Hall, located at 44 E Downer Place in Aurora with limited capacity due to social distancing in addition to requiring masks.

“As we begin the important process of redrawing the state district maps, it is crucial community voices have a clear avenue for their voices to be heard,” said Hernandez. “I am committed to ensuring that our community’s diverse population, especially Black and Latinx voices who have long been pushed to the margins, receive fair and equal representation in our state’s maps.”

“The redistricting process will determine the makeup of our legislative maps for the next ten years and we want to make sure our local communities play a role in that process,” Kifowit said. “These hearings will be a great opportunity to receive public input about the needs of specific communities before legislative maps are created. I strongly encourage those interested to participate or follow along to learn about this important process.”

The hearing is part of Hernandez and Kifowit’s commitment to an open and participatory redistricting process, and is one of 23 scheduled hearings across the state where legislators will receive input from groups and individuals. Members of the public are welcome to share their thoughts on demographic trends they see in their areas, communities of interest, and other information about the region that should inform the process of creating new legislative districts.
