ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – As part of his ongoing efforts to provide property tax relief to area residents, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is supporting legislation that would limit the ability of taxing districts to raise property tax rates in 2022 and 2023.

“As has been illustrated by the financial damage the COVID-19 pandemic has created, residents have been paying far too much in property taxes for far too long,” said Yingling. “While we work in Springfield to reform our broken property tax system, it is important that residents receive relief as soon as possible.”

Yingling is co-sponsoring House Bill 3824, which lowers the maximum amount taxing bodies can raise property tax rates from 5% to 0% in 2022 and 2023, effectively freezing those rates unless voters approved rate increases. This legislation is just one of many property tax relief bills Yingling has introduced or is supporting during this legislative session. He recently introduced legislation to lower property tax costs for residents by raising the maximum savings they can receive through the General Homestead Exemption and the Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption. Yingling also regularly works in his district to provide property tax relief, including hosting property tax relief seminars with local township assessors to help guide residents through the appeals process.

“One of my main goals this session has been to provide financial support to my residents, and limiting property tax costs is a great way to work towards that objective,” said Yingling. “We need to provide assistance to residents, and I will continue to work to explore every avenue to maximize the relief homeowners receive.”
