Yingling Introduces Legislation to Incentivize Electric Vehicle Use

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – As part of his commitment to environmental sustainability, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, introduced legislation to shift additional resources towards electric vehicle use and infrastructure while deprioritizing other alternative fuels, such as propane.

“As electric vehicles become more accessible and prevalent, it is time that we fully embrace this technology and do everything in our power to support and incentivize its use,” said Yingling. “It is incumbent on all of us to do our part to keep our environment clean, and using electric vehicles is a major way we can do that.”

Yingling’s measure, House Bill 245, changes the Alternative Fuels Act to incentivize electric vehicle usage. The bill creates a rebate program that allows electric vehicle owners to apply for a rebate of up to $24,000 per electric vehicle. The bill also creates a grant program to provide funding for charging facilities so that users have more places to charge their vehicles.   

Since entering the General Assembly, Yingling has worked to protect the environment. Recently, he voted to pass legislation that would prevent coal ash pollution and allow the state to regulate carbon emissions. He has also held Environmental Town Halls in his district to give residents the opportunity to voice their concerns about environmental issues and give feedback on how he can best address them.

“It is clear that climate change is real and will have devastating consequences if we do not take drastic steps towards sustainability,” said Yingling. “The increased adoption of electric vehicles is a positive step towards the goal of a clean environment, and we need to keep investing in long-term environmental protections so that everyone has access to clean air and water.”
