COLLINSVILLE, Ill. – To promote local engagement in the legislative process, state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, is hosting a virtual Witness Slip Seminar from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8. A Zoom link will be provided upon RSVP to repkatiestuart@gmail.com

“There are many ways that individuals can be involved and voice their opinions in the legislative process,” said Stuart. “Witness slips allow for a reference for legislators to know which individuals or organizations support or oppose a bill. If you want to let the whole legislature know your view on a bill, then the best way is to file a witness slip.”

Witness slips are read into the official record when a committee hears a bill and are useful to communicate an individual or organization’s position on the bill to all members of the legislature. Stuart’s seminar will outline the process of submitting a witness slip, which can be filed online for any bill that is scheduled to be heard in a committee.

“A lot of new bills will be introduced in the coming weeks, and filing a witness slip is a great way to publicly weigh in on them,” said Stuart. “Whether the process is new to you or you just need a refresher, I hope anyone with an interest in state issues considers attending this seminar. Residents are always welcome to reach out to my office by email or phone to share their opinions on bills as well.”
