DES PLAINES, Ill. – During the holiday season, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is reminding residents of the dangers of impaired driving, and strongly urging them never to put themselves or others in a situation made dangerous by impaired driving.

“Every year impaired drivers continue to take thousands of lives, and each one of those deaths could have been easily saved if the driver were not under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” Moylan said. “There is absolutely no excuse to drive under the influence, especially in today’s world. If you plan on drinking, you should always have a plan to designate a driver, call a taxi, take advantage of rideshare services or have someone pick you up. Having a simple plan could save lives.”

December is designated as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month to remind residents of the dangers of impaired driving in an effort to prevent as many instances of impaired driving as possible, especially during the holiday season. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that over 10,000 lives each year are claimed by impaired driving, the equivalent of nearly 30 lives lost every day. Moylan is strongly urging residents to celebrate the holidays responsibly and to do their part in preventing impaired driving.

“In order to best prevent impaired driving, individuals themselves must take action,” Moylan said. “If you’re going to drink, have a plan in place because it is never okay to drive under the influence. We have to do more to stop these needless deaths and it starts with individuals making better choices to protect themselves and others on the road.”
