DES PLAINES, Ill. – State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is asking residents to consider patronizing local small businesses throughout the community on this upcoming Small Business Saturday, many of which have experienced significant financial difficulty throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This year it has become clearer than ever that communities must come together and help their neighbors during times of crisis, and with the economic struggles small businesses have experienced throughout COVID-19, we have to do all we can to support these institutions when they need it most,” Moylan said. “These businesses are vital to our economy, generating money and creating many jobs. For the sake of our communities and our state as a whole, we need to support small businesses.”
Small Business Saturday was created in an effort to help small businesses compete with large retail stores during the holiday shopping season and will be observed on Nov. 28 this year. According to the National Retail Federation, 189.6 million retail consumers shopped between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday in 2019, with 59.9 million of those consumers shopping on Small Business Saturday, making it the largest retail weekend in history. Moylan is also encouraging residents to stay safe while shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic, advocating use of businesses’ online services, which drew 142.2 million shoppers in 2019.
“This holiday shopping weekend more than ever before, we have to prioritize small businesses so they can attract as many consumers as possible during the largest shopping period of the year,” Moylan said. “The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in tremendous loss across Illinois and the United States. We have to do everything we can to support each other as we continue to fight this pandemic to keep our communities unified and strong.”
