DES PLAINES, Ill. – State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is highlighting $50 million in funding released for the second round of the Connect Illinois program, a comprehensive expansion of broadband internet access across the state.

“In today’s digital world, internet access is a necessity, and during the COVID-19 crisis we have seen web access become significantly more important,” Moylan said. “Many residents are working remotely, taking online classes, seeking virtual health care and searching for crucial economic resources for themselves or their businesses and they need reliable internet access for this to be possible.”

Connect Illinois is a $420 million digital infrastructure enhancement program under Rebuild Illinois. The second round of funding totals $50 million in matching grants to local governments, internet providers, nonprofits and rural cooperatives. The program aims to provide adequate internet access to thousands of homes and businesses across the entire state of Illinois stimulating economic growth and allowing access to numerous other critical resources.

“The need for modernizing our digital infrastructure has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis, and under this plan communities home to thousands of Illinois residents and businesses will finally have reliable access to the digital resources they need,” Moylan said. “I was proud to have supported the Rebuild Illinois program and look forward to the continued investments in communities across Illinois.”
