DES PLAINES, Ill. – Ahead of the upcoming election, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is reminding voters that there are many ways to cast your ballot this year and all of them are secure.

“While the COVID-19 crisis continues, we wanted to give voters plenty of options to cast their ballots in the way that kept them safe, which is why I supported Senate Bill 1863 to expand our vote-by-mail system and allow precincts to implement special voting hours,” Moylan said. “While there are many options for residents to choose from, each and every one of them is a secure method of voting, so residents should simply decide which voting method is best for them.”

Recently the state began sending out mail-in ballots to those who requested them. Residents should be receiving them in the near future if they have not already received them. Early voting has already begun at many polling places and will be widely implemented over the coming weeks. Early voting locations can be found at https://www.cookcountyclerk.com/service/early-voting-locations.

Residents who applied for a mail-in ballot but wish to now vote in person may become more common this year which is allowed with a few minor assurances. If the resident has already received a mail-in ballot, they must bring that ballot to the polling place and surrender it in order to cast their vote in-person. If they do not bring it to the polling place to surrender, they may fill out a provisional ballot which will be counted after all mail-in ballots are counted. If a resident has applied for a mail-in ballot but did not receive it, they may vote in-person after signing an affidavit attesting that their ballot was not delivered.

“The priority for implementing these alternative voting methods was the safety of residents during the pandemic,” Moylan said. “Residents should never have to choose between voting and their safety. This election they have many options to safely and securely cast their votes.”
