DES PLAINES, Ill. – State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and highlighting some crucial resources for survivors of domestic abuse.
“Domestic violence impacts the lives of millions of people across the country, and during the COVID-19 stay-at-home guidelines, instances of domestic abuse have risen,” Moylan said. “The scourge of domestic violence cannot be tolerated, and as we see instances of domestic violence increase, we must act to prevent further harm of women, men and children in Illinois and across the country.”
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Moylan would like to raise awareness on just how common domestic violence is so that residents can recognize signs of abuse and seek help. One in three women and one in six men experience domestic violence in their lifetime. One in four women and one in six men experience sexual abuse before the age of 18. Often these cases of abuse go unnoticed or unreported, so it is crucial if you suspect abuse is happening to offer support to the survivor and help find resources for them.
A free 24-hour domestic violence helpline is available at 877-863-6338 or at 877-863-6339 (TTY). This tool provides many helpful resources to help survivors protect themselves and their loved ones from any abuse. Access to local domestic shelters can also be found at https://www.domesticshelters.org.
“It takes all of us to recognize abusive domestic situations and offer support to survivors so that we can put an end to domestic abuse,” Moylan said. “Domestic violence occurs so much more often than we think, and I’m grateful for the hard work from local advocates and survivors who have built awareness on the importance of addressing this problem.”
