Moylan Highlights Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment Period amid COVID-19 Crisis

DES PLAINES, Ill. – As the COVID-19 public health crisis continues, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is reminding residents of the upcoming open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance marketplace, which lasts from Nov. 1 until Dec. 15.

“As we continue to grapple with a pandemic, having access to health coverage is more important than ever,” Moylan said. “Hundreds of thousands of Illinois residents are experiencing unemployment during this pandemic, so it is imperative that those who lost their job-based health insurance, or any other resident who is in need of a health care plan, understand all of the options available to them so they can purchase a plan that fits their needs.”

The open enrollment period for ACA health insurance plans will ensure that residents have health insurance beginning in 2021, so long as the plan is purchased before the Dec. 15 deadline. Special enrollment periods are available for certain qualifying life events, including the involuntary loss of job-based health care coverage. Those who qualify for the special enrollment period have 60 days to enroll in a new health care plan, otherwise they must wait until the open enrollment period. There are 142 total plans being offered under the ACA this year, and most residents will have several plans to choose from. “It’s important to start reviewing options and planning now so that people can select the best option for themselves,” Moylan said. “Residents without health insurance need to be aware of this enrollment period and the options available to them so that they and their families will have access to adequate health care during this unprecedented public health crisis.”
