DES PLAINES, Ill. – Ahead of the approaching school year for Chicago Public Schools (CPS), state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is appreciative of the Chicago Connected program aiming to provide free high speed internet to 100,000 students, and encourages ongoing efforts to implement creative solutions while CPS students continue remote learning.

“This school year comes with many challenges as students are remotely learning, but the efforts of CPS to provide high speed internet service to 100,000 students is a wonderful display of creative problem solving as we continue to battle against COVID-19,” Moylan said. “We all want a return to normalcy as soon as it is safe, but in the meantime this program and other efforts to transition to remote learning smoothly are critical to student success.”

Chicago Connected is a program to provide high speed internet service to an estimated 100,000 students, whom Census data concluded lacked adequate access to internet. The program was initially rolled out over the summer, but will remain crucial as remote learning for CPS students continues into the fall. Eligible households will receive up to four years of free internet service. CPS remains committed toward returning to in-person instruction as soon as possible considering the impact of COVID-19 and following guidance from public health officials.

“This program is essential so that students who don’t have access to adequate internet service can still continue their education while CPS continues remote learning,” Moylan said. “Even when it is safe for students to return to full in-person instruction, this program will continue to help these students do their homework and study at home.”
