DES PLAINES, Ill. – September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, hopes to eliminate the stigma attached to mental health issues and work toward addressing the mental health crisis in our society.

“The stigma associated with mental health issues in this country is dangerous, and has led to more mental health issues and rising suicide rates,” Moylan said. “We need to come together and address this issue. Make it known to everyone experiencing mental health issues that they are not alone and have an honest and open conversation about this dire problem in our country.”

National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about suicide, facilitate open conversations about mental health and connect people to mental health resources. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for those between the ages of 10-34, and the fourth leading cause of death for those between the ages of 35-54. Since 2001, the suicide rate has increased by 31%. Research by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) shows that about half of individuals who die from suicide are diagnosed with a mental disorder, but about 90% exhibited symptoms of mental illness. Since the COVID-19 crisis began, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that one quarter of young adults have contemplated suicide. If you, or someone you know is experiencing crisis or suicidal thoughts, call the national suicide hotline at 1-800-TALK (8255) or text NAMI to 741-741 to speak with a crisis counselor.

“So many people in today’s society experience serious mental health issues, but often are uncomfortable asking for help, and thousands of lives are lost every year because of it,” Moylan said. “The time to address this issue is now, especially as we live through the COVID-19 crisis which continues to create serious mental health concerns for huge portions of our society.”
