CALUMET CITY, Ill. – State Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City, released the following statement calling on electricity provider ComEd to reimburse residents of Northern Illinois who were impacted by recent storms for the costs of damages to their homes and businesses:

“The recent storms and resulting property damage and power outages have put a huge financial liability on our community. Residents need assistance, and it should come from ComEd. Across the state, power companies and other major utilities are placing as much of the cost burden as they can onto consumers who are already dealing with much more than a few broken windows or broken tree branches. Homeowners are dealing with roofs that have collapsed, and people running small businesses have had entire storefronts torn up.

“People are trying to fix their situations, often without power, and wealthy corporations are padding profits by making those same people pay for all the repairs to their power systems. At a time when people deserve assistance the most, big utilities like ComEd are forcing them to pay for every little expense themselves, and it’s not right. ComEd should be shouldering its fair share of the burden.”
