DES PLAINES, Ill. – State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, released the following statement on Thursday in regards to concerns about voting-by-mail this year:

“Over the past few weeks we have seen a lot of misinformation regarding the expanded vote-by-mail package that we passed into law and residents deserve to hear the truth. The vote-by-mail system in Illinois, in which any resident may request an absentee ballot, has existed in Illinois for many years and there is no evidence it has contributed toward a heightened level of voter fraud. The package that was signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker, simply expands upon the existing system for residents who do not wish to risk exposure to COVID-19 in order to cast their ballots.”

“Voting by mail is a safe and secure method of voting, and the claims that it will lead to widespread voter fraud are simply not based in reality. All residents who wish to vote-by-mail are encouraged to do so and should have no worry of their ballots being misdirected or invalidated. Voters also have the option to cast their mail-in ballots by depositing them into the drop boxes that will be available at early voting locations, or vote in person.”

“We should be encouraging as many residents as possible to vote, because our democracy thrives on an active voting population. The efforts to suppress voters by spreading misinformation about the reliability of this system are without merit and should not be given any sort of legitimacy. The right to vote should be greatly respected in our democracy and we should continue to provide options for increased voter participation and not suppress the voices of Illinois residents.”
