ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – With unemployment rates rising throughout the past few months, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is highlighting new job training resources for those that are out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The economic downturn that has been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has hit families in many ways, including job loss,” said Yingling. “Many Illinoisans are out of work and face uncertainty through no fault of their own, which is why it’s more important than ever to provide ample resources and assistance to help families through these difficult times.”

As of May 2020, the unemployment rate in Illinois was 14.7%, with Lake County’s at 12.9%, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security. In response, The State of Illinois is partnering with the online higher education platform Coursera to offer over 3,800 courses that teach in-demand skills to unemployed Illinoisans. Illinois is one of the first states in the nation to provide free online job training courses to its residents. Registration for the online courses is available now through September by visiting the Coursera website at www.coursera.org/government/workforce-recovery.

During the last legislative session, Yingling worked to provide relief to those who have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He helped pass Senate Bill 471, which expands unemployment benefits by allowing those who are unemployed to receive a larger percentage of their previous income through unemployment benefits.

“As the economy begins to rebuild and jobs start to return, it is important to develop in-demand skills and be ready for new opportunities,” continued Yingling. “As we continue to find resources to help families get through these difficult times, I highly encourage those who are out of work to take the time to prepare for the future by furthering their education.”
