AURORA, Ill. – State rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, recently held a blood drive in Aurora to help reduce the blood supply shortage in Illinois’ blood banks.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of thousands of blood drives across the state, resulting in a severe shortage in our blood supply,” said Hernandez. “This critical shortage offers a time for community partners and locals to give back and help save lives in a safe way, so I want to thank everyone who came and donated.”

Hernandez partnered with Versiti Blood Center of Illinois to host the blood drive. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Versiti has had to cancel over 4,000 blood drives across the state, and is seeking local community partners to host additional donation drives.

“As we continue to battle this ongoing pandemic, our local blood banks require the help of local community partners to host drives and the help of community members to donate,” said Hernandez. “I strongly encourage local community groups to consider hosting a blood drive to continue coming together to help one another.”
