JOLIET, Ill. – State Rep. Larry Walsh, Jr., D – Joliet, passed legislation which would give municipalities and other local jurisdictions more control and discretion over imposing tolls on public roadways. The bill is now awaiting Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s signature.
“This bill gives Will County the authority to proceed with the Houbolt bridge extension which will enable greater efficiency and reduce the high volume of truck traffic,” Walsh said. “The passage of this legislation modernizes the old tollway structure to accommodate a path forward for Will County while also attracting investment from the private sector.”
Walsh’s Senate Bill 531 establishes that counties, municipalities, local governments, or private operators may impose a toll upon public roadways. The legislation is a result of negotiations between the city of Joliet, Will County, and CenterPoint Group investors.
“I am confident that we have approached this with informed input from all of the appropriate stakeholders to ensure successful expansion of the Houbolt bridge,” Walsh said. “I am also optimistic that the governor shares a commitment to making this a reality for our community.”
