BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. – This past session, state Rep. Diane Pappas, D-Itasca, supported a new law to bring emergency relief to Illinois renters and homeowners impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
“As a result of this unprecedented health crisis, many Illinoisans have been put out of work and are struggling to make ends meet,” said Pappas. “Expanding rent and mortgage assistance will provide a critical safety net for our working families during these difficult times.”
In response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, Pappas supported Senate Bill 264, to ensure relief and protection for homeowners and renters. The measure will secure $396 million dollars in emergency funding for rental and mortgage assistance in the upcoming fiscal year. In addition, a portion of the funds will be used to help complete previously approved affordable rental housing development projects. This bill is now law.
“This new law will provide the financial assistance and structural support our families need to access housing relief and stability,” Pappas said. “No matter the circumstances, every family deserves compassion, empathy and support.”
