CHICAGO – This session, state Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, supported a new piece of legislation to expand workplace protections for frontline workers and other essential employees who contract COVID-19 while on the job.

“Our frontline workers continue to put their lives and health on the line to protect our community especially in the midst of this pandemic,” said Buckner. “This measure will help ensure the safety and well-being for all of our essential workers by providing them with the compensation and protection they are entitled to receive.”

Continuing his commitment to workplace safety, Buckner supported House Bill 2455 to strengthen workplace protections and increase benefits for first responders and other essential workers. The measure requires employers to provide workers’ compensation relief to essential workers who contract COVID-19 while on the job. Additionally, the legislation makes changes to the unemployment insurance program allowing the state to access up to $3 billion in federal CARES Act funding. The bill has been signed into law.

“Although this is a critical step forward, I recognize there remains a lot more to be done to provide the resources and compensation all of our essential workers truly deserve,” said Buckner. “In order to build a stronger and more equitable Illinois, I remain committed to supporting our essential workers.”
