DES PLAINES, Ill. – Concerned about the safety of voters in the midst of a pandemic, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, recently supported a measure to expand vote-by-mail options and to grant local election authorities the ability to set up ‘curbside’ voting options and special voting hours for seniors.

“The right to vote is integral to the foundation of our country, and we cannot allow people’s voices to be overlooked, especially during this unprecedented crisis,” Moylan said. “I am concerned about the safety of voters, which is why I am encouraging residents to utilize vote-by-mail and to securely vote in the comfort of their own home.”

The Moylan-supported Senate Bill 1863, which focuses on the 2020 general election and was created in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, would encourage voters to mail-in their votes by automatically sending vote-by-mail applications to voters who participated in either the 2018 general election, 2019 consolidated election or 2020 primary election. Additionally, it allows for election authorities to arrange for special senior voting hours and curbside voting in an effort to lower health risks for voters and election employees.

“There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding this pandemic, and we have to be proactive if we want to prevent problems from happening in November,” Moylan said. “Voting by mail is safe and secure, I hope people take advantage of the opportunity to use it.”
