SPRINGIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City, released this statement following the adjournment of the special legislative session in which he worked to provide relief for his community from the COVID-19 pandemic:
“As Illinois continues to combat the threats posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, I remain committed to addressing the needs and priorities of everyone in our community. The economic effects of this disease will be significant and lasting, and it is critical that our state is proactive about preventing problems as they come up. We worked to pass a balanced budget that funds crucial state programs and creates new support systems for those dealing with mental health issues.
“While our first responders always deserve our gratitude and support, over the past several months, members of the medical community have continuously distinguished themselves as true public servants. Unfortunately, far too many patients and their families are now forced to deal with enormous costs of that health care. Illinoisans need affordable options when they get sick. I recently helped pass legislation to curb the growing price of health care and provide essential workers and first responders with increased benefits in case they get sick. These steps will help ease the impact of medical problems if they strike.
“Illinoisans are facing economic problems as much as medical, and those problems are especially exacerbated by high property taxes. Small business owners who are already putting up with financial challenges related to COVID-19 should not be forced to empty their pockets paying for property taxes. This session, we passed legislation to suspend late payment penalties to provide relief for property owners immediately. We also worked to support older Illinoisans with a one-year application deferral for seniors, veterans and persons with disabilities, because critical benefits need to be reliable.
“While our community faces down problems from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important that everyone’s voice is heard. If anyone has a question or concern, I encourage them to call me at 708-596-7053 or email me at repjones.jones@gmail.com.”
